House on a Site of Special Scientific Interest

Northern Ireland

Brief

A new energy efficient house on a sensitive site.

Solution

Stephen Ball designed this planning-permitted house as a careful response to its sensitive rural setting. Containing a garage, entrance hall, and guest accommodation, the robust stone plinth anchors the house to the landscape, drawing on the character of local agricultural structures and grounding it within the contours of the site. Above, the timber and glass living spaces hover over the stone base, reducing the perceived mass of the building and allowing it to sit comfortably within, and providing expansive views of the protected landscape.
